Retro Game Manager

The official desktop application of Game Database

Retro Game Manager is the companion app of Game Database — a complete solution for organizing, preserving, and managing your video game collection.

It lets you maintain your games locally while staying connected to a shared, community-driven database.
Everything is stored in a unified format designed for transparency, portability, and long-term preservation.

What It Does

Retro Game Manager helps you build and maintain a complete, structured game library.
Each game entry can include:

  • Game files (ROMs, executables, or disk images)
  • Covers, screenshots, videos, and manuals
  • Metadata: title, platform, year, genre, developer, PEGI rating, languages, and description
  • Community-sourced information directly from Game Database

All this information is stored in a single file with the .egf extension — your personal, portable game capsule.

The EGF Standard

The EGF format (Enhanced Game File) is an open, ZIP-compatible structure designed by the Game Database team for transparency and preservation.

Each .egf file contains:

  • A info.json metadata file (title, platform, genre, rating, etc.)
  • Subfolders for cover/, screenshots/, manuals/, videos/, and roms/
  • Optional checksum files (MD5/SHA1) for integrity verification

EGF files can be opened like regular ZIP archives, ensuring openness and independence — even outside the app.

Connected to Game Database

Retro Game Manager integrates seamlessly with Game Database, allowing users to:

  • Retrieve and sync metadata automatically
  • Follow shared standards for platforms and genres
  • Keep local collections consistent with global data
  • Contribute new information back to the community

The app works offline-first, but benefits from optional online updates through Game Database’s open API.

Why Use Retro Game Manager

  • 100% local data ownership — no cloud, no accounts
  • Works on Windows, macOS, and Linux
  • Open format, future-proof and portable
  • Designed for preservation, not consumption
  • Community-supported via Game Database

Retro Game Manager is ideal for retro collectors, archivists, and enthusiasts who want total control over their digital libraries.

A Growing Ecosystem

Together, Retro Game Manager and Game Database form a shared ecosystem:
the desktop app for managing your private collection, and the online platform for collaborative knowledge.

Future features will include:

  • Metadata synchronization
  • Automatic scraping from trusted sources
  • Community tagging and sharing
  • Cross-platform backups and validation
